Life is Hard TV # 13 - Exploring Cooking Wines

Roy and Dave discuss the best wines to use for cooking. Rule of thumb: if you can’t drink it, don’t cook with it. Check out the sodium content in those supermarket “cooking” wines, not good to use. White and red cooking vinos, enjoy!! Cent Anni!

Giving it all up…

I recently caught a TV commercial that opens with the question: Why is travel these days about what you give up…and not what you get? The woman had a lovely, soothing voice, and clearly an answer she was being paid to withhold. She did eventually give up a few “what you give up” tidbits, such as available electric sockets and the ability to take off your shoes only when you feel like it. So I learned nothing, really.

But it did get me thinking about what I may have given up on my last few trips—those little things besides your bed and your routine that you may not even realize you’ve lost until they’re gone. For example:

-On a Carnival Cruise to Mexico: Your dignity

-On a writers’ retreat to Maui: Your writing career

-On a visit to Niagara Falls with your parents: Your belief that marriage is “for you”

-On a ski trip to Park City with a bunch of Germans: Your progressive views of Germany having “changed”

-On a romantic road trip from LA to San Francisco: Your love for your boyfriend

-On a trip to Coronado with a Navy SEAL: Your faith in the mental stability of the Special Forces

-On a visit to a restroom in northwest India: Your beliefs about Pakistan being the bad guy

So, yes—the commercial was indeed correct. And on two of the above seven items I’m completely kidding, so calm down.

I’ll also add that the commercial that prompted this entire line of thought turned out, ironically, to be for Amtrak—which, over the course of a 5-day cross-country trip, will murder every last ounce of your patience, humanity, circulation, sleep health, bowel health, and will to live—and yes ‘necessarily in that order.’

Getaways get back at you…

I recently walked past two girls chatting on a Manhattan sidewalk and overheard one say to the other, “OMG I so need a tan” (and yes, she used the letters OMG as opposed to the actual words). The tan comment was, of course, followed by an enthusiastic discussion of how much they both “needed a vacation.”

Now, I understand that the middle of winter is THE number one time for people to want to pack a bag and flee. I’ve lived in wonderful climates (Sydney, Miami, Palm Springs), as well as horrendous climates (Chicago, Chicago, Chicago). Yet, in truth, this Winter Getaway business has never made much sense to me. Why go on a fabulous vacation in the dead of gray-slush winter…only to have to return to said gray-slush winter in one week? Doesn’t the warmth and perspective of being away and smelling like a coconut only make it that much worse when you come back? And, most importantly, is there any more painful act in the life of a human being than the act of putting on a turtleneck OVER a tan?

Clearly the solution is to: 1) live in Sydney, Miami, or Palm Springs; 2) only go on vacation when your life at home is already glorious; or 3) leave now and stay away long enough that it’s already spring when you get back.

(Incidentally, if anyone can finance #3, feel free to let me know and I’ll join you…)
