I recently walked past two girls chatting on a Manhattan sidewalk and overheard one say to the other, “OMG I so need a tan” (and yes, she used the letters OMG as opposed to the actual words). The tan comment was, of course, followed by an enthusiastic discussion of how much they both “needed a [...] Not that there’s anything wrong with Hawaii. It’s simply being disqualified. Too easy. Too visited. Too…Obama. Let’s just say up front that Hawaii and all its stuff is amazing and blah, etc.: humid outdoor airports, gift shop macadamia nuts, Road-to-Hana family vomiting, and lobbies way too breezy for the carnival of a sarong someone talked [...] Vegetarians have it bad enough at home (and at the Dallas airport), and given today’s travel restrictions and airline baggage-blackmail, packing an extra suitcase full of protein bars is really no longer an option. “Winging it” can also be dicey, as living on bread and chocolate (i.e., how I backpacked through Europe) will simply result [...] My father was on an Australian variety show and my mother was in the circus, which explains…a fair amount (like why I’m odd and where I’ve been).
